2010 Updated: Try these women's winter boots and footwear sales for cold weather travel or just for walking. Sorel Caribou and Kamiks are great. REI has goodies, now.

Women who are looking for winter boots, which will work for big snow days or big ski trips, should check out Sorel Caribou Boots or Kamik Brooklyn Boots. Originally, this article was written after Christmas 2009, but my update is done (November 9, 2010) and as the season progresses I'll update again.

Sorel Boots

Sorel Caribou Boots are the classic winter boot for après ski and for tromping around in the snow while the kiddies are taking snowboarding or skiing lessons. These clunky boots are so universal, they’ve been seen in Sun Valley, Heavenly, Mt Bachelor, and Park City with both real mink and faux fur coats. Yes, they go with jeans, leggings, and anything. If Uggs are the boot of LA, Sorels are the boot of real, outdoorsy gals.

I have Caribou Sorels. Sorels are waterproof, warm, and traction-perfect with their rubber lug outsole, and they run very large. These boots are hunky, chunky and heavy, but they are very stable when the rest of the world isn’t.

Sorel Cate the Great Boot: These are Sorels, so you know they are going to last. Some girls (in the reviews) said that they sent the Cates back because they didn't like how the boot looked, but I think these boots are adorable. Especially, when compared to "normal" Sorels. This footwear scored high on functionality and if some dog ate my other boots, I'd probably buy Cates. These are sold at many websites, so click around.

Kamik Winter Boots

Kamik Brooklyns are similar to Sorels but they are a lighter weight, which is a big consideration if you are going on a winter trip and you need to make the weight limit on an airline or you will be lugging your bags around yourself. Some reviewers say these run big, some say they run small, and some say they run just right. Either ask Goldilocks or order right away, before your big trip or a big snowfall. Then, you'll have time to exchange them for the perfect fit.

The North Face Boots

The North Face 'Nuptse Fur IV' Boot: I'm recommending these based on two reviews where a Colorado girl said these were lightweight, warm, and very comfy, and another gal agreed. The shiny black Nuptse Boots were panned (as ugly) by a Nordstrom shopper (hey, they're flipping moon boots) so I'm recommending the matte brown. See these at Nordstrom and other online stores for around $99, give or take a few. Do your comparison clicking.

Sale - The North Face Nuptse Fur III Boots: These are an REI.com closeout from '09 and they get excellent reviews from many women, who say they feel like slippers. These are 30% off. ($82.93, were $120.) REI.com is a good store run by great people. It started out as a mountain-climbing equipment co-op in Seattle. They're very customer friendly. If you have any problem with REI, let me know and I'll do what I can to help (if I'm able to get to an internet and not away from work).

St. Moritz Boots

Sale - Hi-Tec St. Moritz Winter Boots at REI.com: I am not recommending these if will be walking on ice. People love this style for warmth, but a few women said that they had no grip on ice or in slush. So, you should think about your snow conditions before wearing them outside. (These might be fine for mud, grass or hiking in rain, though I'm not familiar with their sole.) I assume that the other St. Moritz snow boots would have the same sole. Contact someone at REI for specifics about different terrains.

Baffin Snow BootsSale - Miku by Baffin Dawa Winter Boots at REI.com: I've never tried these boots and I'm not interested in buying boots because I have my trusty, but heavy, Sorels. So, I'm going on reports from Amazon.com. The boots on sale are from 2009, but they look the same and, since you will be dealing with REI, I think these are a go. One word of caution: Unless you are a snow bunny princess, the sand color is not going to look pristene for very long. Darker colors will be fine.

Baffin Kamala Winter Boots: These get very good ratings for warmth and comfort. And, I think they're cute

Nordstrom.com Winter Boots

For the woman who is looking more for style than functionality for walking in extreme snow and ice conditions, Nordstrom.com is the place to check out boots.

Tecnica Soft II Moon Boot: If you are a snow-bound fashionista, and you want a disco Moon Boot, try these. There are no reviews, but they are Italian, cute, and come in cool colors. And, I assume these are from the same Technica that made my ski boots back in the day, before I destroyed my neck after hitting an unexpected patch of refrozen, wavy ice. (Try REI, too.)

UGG Australia Lynnea Boot: Obviously, this is not a snow boot, but I love it. You can flip the cuff up. Good golly Ms Molly, this is one fine boot. It covers so many current styles: 70s clog, ankle bootie and cuffed boot. Sweet.

I am sorry to report that the Nordies sale boots are mostly fashion boots, though most of their fashion boots are wonderful. However, I think you will find what you are looking for if you can hang in there for a few days or weeks. Look more during this time, so you can tell a good sale from a crummy markdown. If money is not a problem, there are many fabulous, expensive boots at Nordstrom's that I've left out.

If you don't need boots for snow, you can get European style with Born Tall Leather Flat Boot. These are about $160 and they mimic the truly-expensive designer boots well.

There are winter boots for snow, ice, and freezing rain. There are winter boots for fun and fashion. The woman with the most boots wins.
