Men seldom have pals to talk to, like women have, so I’ve tried to pull together a list of powerful songs that you might relate to. Some are sad. Some are strong. And, some are just on the list because I like them and they might make you feel happy.
Unfortunately, or fortunately, you can never stop loving someone altogether. But, over time your strong emotions will chill and you will feel more positive about your new life. You will find someone to help take your loneliness away, if that’s what you want. Or, you will learn to be happy on your own, if that’s what you want.
Songs for Guys
Because I’m a female, it’s hard for me to know what kinds of songs might make a man feel better during, or after, his divorce. All I can do is use my imagination.
- I want you to feel, but I don’t want you to feel depressed.
- I want you to re-energize, but I don’t want you to be angry.
- I want you to be hopeful, but I don’t want you to think that things will be perfect.
- I want you to hate the idea of divorce, but love your children and show respect to your ex-wife.
- I want you to know you are one of many men who have lived through this, so that you will keep on going and help your children whenever you can.
No one’s life is perfect, whether that person is married or single. So, I hope you hear a song on this list that helps you feel a connection with some of the blokes who wrote these lyrics. You will get through this difficult time, just as they have.
Sad Songs
I wasn’t sure if I wanted to put sad love songs on the list, but sadness is a part of life. Yeah, don’t worry…I won’t let you wallow in self-pitying ballads for very long.
- " Broken Vow " by Josh Groban
- " You’ll Think of Me " by Keith Urban: Here, I’ll throw you a country Western song because the singer reminds me of, and looks like, a guy I knew in high school. And, I hope you catch the irony.
- I can’t take three slow songs in a row, so here’s some Elvis.
Songs About Divorce
Lots of men wallow in self-pity and start drinking or drugging. I hope that’s not where you are headed, but you might like hearing how other guys feel about their divorces.
- " Grounds for Divorce " by Elbow: Hey, I get most of the references, but not all of them, though it’s a rocking good tune.
- " Ain’t No Sunshine When She’s Gone " by Bill Withers: One more sad song and I hope you’re getting some of this out of your system. Right?
Feel Good Songs
Enough moping about, my fine feathered friends. Time to wake your spirit back up and get energized. Things have changed and you have more options since the last time you looked. Well, I don’t know if guys sing or dance or do jumping jacks to cheer themselves up, but you might want to pack these tunes onto your iPod in case you take a road trip. And, look around for your other feel-good favorites. (If you want to skip ads, close YoutTube and reopen.)
- " It’s My Life " by Bon Jovi: I don’t want you to be a jerk who deserts his kids, but this is your new anthem.
- " I Hate Myself for Loving You " by Joan Jett
- " Eye of the Tiger " by Survivor
- " Goodbye to You " by Scandal (Written by a guy)
- " Don’t Look Back " by Boston
Mellow Songs
I don’t want to leave you with all of that energy. So, contemplate how many times guys have been hurt and survived. You will, too.
- " Bell Bottom Blues " by Eric Clapton / Derek & the Dominos
- " We Just Disagree " by Dave Mason
