2010 UPDATED! Easy one-size-fits-all gifts: Chunky knit hats, scarves (matched set or not), fingerless gloves, lace, studs, pearls, disco sequins and 70s metallics.

Here are some easy Christmas presents for teenage girls. The hot trends for 2010/2011 accessories are chunky, plaid or embellished scarves, and berets, beanies and British Mod caps. One of the reasons that these are popular gifts is that they come in "one size fits all" and are usually inexpensive.

Just like last year, one of the big questions about these teenage clothing gifts is whether or not your girl will want to wear sequins or disco metallics. Well, there are other questions about best colors for hair and skin, but knit hats and scarves are about as close to fail-safe fashion as a granny, mother, or boyfriend can get. These make good Christmas or birthday presents.

Gifts for Teenage Girls

While every gift situation is different, there are some general points to consider when buying a present for any teen:

  • If she spends her school days at the mall: Try sequins, studs, lace, pearl embellishments.
  • If she’s squeamish about mud: Sequins, all embellishments.
  • If she freaks about her hair frizzing or curling in the rain: Probably sequins, studs, lace.
  • If she’s artsy: Sequins, studs, lace.
  • If she wears high heels and a fair amount of makeup: Sequins, disco, all embellishments.
  • If she seems grunge or goth or hangs with a rebellious crowd: Studs.
  • If she only talks about softball: No sequins, no pearls, maybe studs.
  • If she's very shy: No sequins, few or no embellishments.
  • If she’s preppy: Who knows. Lace, Bows?

There are several popular online stores for teenagers, and usually the accessories on these websites are priced for regular people and teens / 20 year olds who don’t go clubbing with celebrites.

Hats and Scarves

Beanies and berets are usually worn in one of two different ways. Some girls just pull the hats down onto their heads, while others (usually girls with longer hair) wear these hats more on the back of their heads. Newer trends for accessories include: Infinity scarves (endless loops), metallics, lace or crochet anything, pucker/ripple scarves, reversible scarves, embellishments on anything, and fingerless gloves.

  • Anthropologie.com: My SoCal fashionista daughter likes the Swingy Tassel Trapper hat. Too bad she lives in LA and hasn't moved back to Seattle. She probably won't get this for Christmas.
  • Anthropologie.com: Wintertide Scarf with faux fur is cozy and clever. Plaid Spectrum Scarf is gorgeous in three colorways.
  • Anthropologie.com: Too cute Moffitt Newsboy cap and Bit-of-Brim Hat are perfectly Mod. Solitary Hat is 70s disco.

Forever21.com

Forever 21 is the gold standard for cheap teen fashions, but I've known some adult women who have found chic, trendy and cheap goodies for themselves.

  • Soft Crinkled Scarf: A classic plaid, but in a cute and wearable mustard and orange. ($5.90!)
  • Fingerless Lace Gloves: Black lace gloves will make your outfit. Very Gothy punk rocker. ($2.50)
  • Extra Chunky Scarf: Pursue the chunky knit trend without adding pounds to your silhouette. If rust is not your color, this would look great against a deep or dark blue coat.
  • Pearl Trim Scarf: Good for all girls. Maybe even Victorian Goths. ($18)
  • Knitted Pom Pom Beanie: This is so cute with its metallic flecks. If your girl is fair, get the black/gold. If she's brunette, get the camel/gold. If unsure, I like the camel best. ($6.80)
  • Spiral Crochet Beret: Cute, chunky, and the open pattern is cooler for ladies in warm climates. Beanies with open knits (holes in the pattern) are always versatile.

CharlotteRusse.com

Moms, grannies, friends, and neighbors can afford most of the accessories at Charlotte Russe. It’s like Forever 21.

  • Hematite Studded Beret: Can go disco glam, punk, boho, or anything. ($9.50)
  • Fuzzy Marled Headwrap: I like the rust combo. Teal combo is very earthtone for neo hippies or 70s styles.

Charlotte Russe has quite a few hat styles to choose from:

  • Sequin Beanies
  • Rinestone Berets
  • 70s Beanies

Wet Seal

This is another mall moll favorite.

  • Contrast Bow Beanie: Very Gossip Girl ($9.50)
  • Bow Applique Fingerless Gloves: Pick one or the other. Not bows everywhere.
  • Lurex Ruffle Scrunch Scarf: Lacy, fishnetty.

Urban Outfitters

Urban Outfitters is usually a tad more expensive but probably more enduring.

  • Brixton Portman Felt Cloche
  • Grace Hats Mercury Porkpie Hat
  • Pins and Needles Cocktail Hat

These kinds of trendy accessories are everywhere and teenage stores seem to change merchandise all the time, so check around to see what's out there. You should also try: Aeropostale, ShopBop, The Limited, Betsey Johnson and all the usual stores.
